Pinterest

This is what happens when you join Pinterest.

1. You spend 15-20 minutes trying to figure out how in the heck you join this thing anyway. You click the button on Pinterest.com, wait a few minutes to receive an ambiguous and totally unhelpful email in response, and then you vigorously text your closest and tech-savviest buddies in the hopes they'll clear up the confusion. If you're lucky like me, your totally With It younger sister will clue you in before you have to post about your ignorance on Facebook...

2. After that ordeal, you are faced with a second test: figuring out just what in the heck you've joined anyway. You are confronted with an endless stream of images, all beautiful and mysterious and entirely overwhelming, and you begin to click through them, helpless against their curious allure. And then you look up and it's three hours later. And if you're me, the kids are waking up and none of your chores have been accomplished.

3. Over the next few days, you experience several stages of Pinterest membership: first, Over-Pinning, because every single pin you see is way cooler than anything you've seen before in real life or even in Real Simple! (ba-dum-bum)

Second stage: Non-Pinning, because you've received a few emails informing you that you now have followers, some of whom have repinned your pins, and you freak out just a little because, wait, I didn't know the whole world was watching me... But by that time you're hooked, and you. must. repin. Just *this* one. And maybe *that* one. Oh heck. Who cares who's watching - they're probably too addicted themselves to be judgmental...

4. And then you face a crossroads. You know that further involvement with Pinterest could result in serious antisocial behaviors - or, perhaps worse, a maniacal drive to Make Things, followed almost immediately by intense depression upon discovering a distinct lack of craftiness in your skill set. (Or a distinct lack of budget for trips to Hobby Lobby.)

But if you didn't stick with it, you might miss out on super cute things like these Etsy dolls:

And you might never discover amazing tricks like making a dress form out of duct tape.

5. So a week or so passes, and you've already chosen the Pinterest app over the Facebook app (farewell, Friends, at least for now) because you are at least disciplined enough to know that no good can come from having both apps, er, at your fingertips... And you'd probably feel just a little bit guilty over it if it weren't for the fact that Pinterest helped you survive an incredibly long line at the Wal-Mart check-out counter earlier this evening...

And so it begins.
