Determination

When Luke was a baby, we really thought he might turn out to be a thumbsucker, the way he worked so hard those first few months to get his hand to his mouth. My momma always says a thumbsucker is an easy baby, so a part of me was eager for him to take off with it. But once he was big enough to keep that paci in, the thumb was totally out, end of story.

Not so Sarah. Well, it remains to be seen whether or not she'll end up a thumbsucker; she hasn't actually achieved "thumb in mouth" yet and is perfectly satisfied with a pacifier. But she has Not Given Up on that thumb (or fingers or something). I'll get that paci in her mouth, and she'll half-close her eyes, sucking contentedly, and so I walk away to finish the dishes or some other saintly house-chore - and by the time I'm back, the paci is lying a foot away from her head, and she's working with all her tiny might to get that whole fist of hers in her mouth! It happens every time...

So today I began wondering what this reveals about her burgeoning personality. Perhaps she's the type who will never, never, never give up on her dreams? Maybe she enjoys a challenge? Or what if she is already demonstrating a stellar work ethic and the ability to tirelessly and methodically achieve solutions? 

Or maybe she's just learned that if Mommy has walked away, she may not be back for a while, and if the paci falls out, it's up to her to deal with it....
