Future Builder?

Many of you know that our house has been something of a construction zone since mid-January. Most of the work is now (thankfully) completed, but a few odds and ends remain (note to self: triple contractor's time estimate and THEN add a few extra weeks for all the tiny little fixes that continue to pop up...). This morning our contractors were here once again and hard at work, and my dear child didn't miss a moment of it - staring out the back door with rapt attention as the men used all kinds of fascinating equipment, like saws and hammers and screwdrivers.

Is it any wonder that Luke has perfected the art of Hammering over the past few months? A "tool set" was among his Christmas gifts this year, and I think he's played with it (and the old-fashioned wooden "pounder toy" that we hurriedly purchased when we realized the tool set had nothing for its hammer to pound) as much as any other toy.

It's been especially fun to see him copy the way he sees the grown-ups using tools - whether he's "helping" Daddy screw together a new IKEA dresser or inspecting the craftsmanship of the house construction.

One morning when the workmen started early, Luke ran into his bedroom and soon reappeared with the pounder set - and then proceeded to do his own hammering alongside the workers. You know, just one of the crew...

I am proud to say that he's also getting pretty good at what I affectionately call the Vickers' 11th Commandment: (Thou Shalt) Hammer Only Nails. We work really hard on that one. :)
