The Locks Have Changed

Moral: If something's broke, tell your landlord.

So we've lived on Lindsey Lane for over a full year now. The house came with a keychain of about fifty keys, and that should've been the first clue. It's not that the locks are the only screwy thing about the house, but they're certainly the most annoying. The front door has no real "knob" - only one of those fancy handles on the front side, and it doesn't even work. Instead, it has two deadbolts, one of which has a keyhole on both sides. Basically, that means we have to lock it to keep it closed, which is weird and highly confusing to all of our guests. The back door's not so bad, but it still requires a key to lock it (even from the inside). So anyway, we get sick of the situation periodically, and we've made at least three different trips to Home Depot, each time hoping (vainly) that their doorknob/deadbolt packages no longer cost over $100. The last time we went, as we walked dejectedly out of the store, we decided that it wouldn't hurt to call the property management folks.

We're highly low-maintenance people, you see. We don't call our landlords for anything. If the house burned down, we'd probably rebuild it before bothering them. It's weird, I know. But this one time, we decided to go with the mantra: "what are they going to do? kick us out?" P called last week, and today they came to see what the problem was. And sure enough, it turns out that our Locking Situation is not only a major fire hazard, but also enables burglars. All we wanted was an actual doorknob on the front door; we got completely new systems for both front and back! And if I'd dared to mention it, they might have even fixed the other two doors of our house (but who needs four working doors?).

Wonder if they could do something about all the dead flora in our yard. Probably not. Poor dead flora.
